Two-family Residence

Ibiza (Spain) / 2014 / 550 mq

  • The building, thanks to the terrain on which it stands, has a very privileged view that guides the eye of the guests through several kilometers of gentle slopes, between the coastal countryside and the Mediterranean scrub, slipping up to the blue sea. The requests of the Customers were clear: they desired a new contemporary house, technologically advanced, which avoided the residential construction stereotypes of the area. The house had to accommodate two families with the guarantee of mutual privacy, with an area in common for sharing, an outbuilding for the guests, a swimming pool and plenty of outdoor space to be enjoyed with friends. But, above all, the focus was the enhancement of the environment. The project is structured through a new system of volumes which are arranged inside a property by creating a new open perspective on the landscape and from the landscape towards a new artificial horizon, that is to say architecture. The new volumes, modelled on the ground, orient the main views towards the sea; while upstream they represent a frame for the sequence of terraces, gardens and patios which extend over various altitudes. The profiles of the volumes, covered in steel slabs and Corten steel, are marked by deep openings that enhance the figurative value of the forms. Forms that re-emerge from the ground and talk with the ground with measured eloquence, in a logic of relations between nature and artifice. The solid idea of rootedness to the ground guides the entire project, and it models itself strategically according to morphology, in favour of the environment. The living area opens onto the landscape thanks to large windows that bring together the living-room and the kitchen with the sea and the infinity pool in the garden. Thanks to the slope of the terrain and the unobstructed view, it is very hard to understand where the pool ends and where the sea begins. The sleeping area, consisting of spacious rooms, each with its own bathroom, communicates with the living area through equipped filters where storage and technical rooms are placed. The windows and the glass cuts establish an intimate relationship with the garden and, for what concerns the master bedroom, also with the landscape, which is enhanced by the presence of plants, shrubs and typical trees of the local Mediterranean scrub. The front part facing the North has few narrow and high windows while the part facing the South opens onto the garden and the landscape with a large opening on the living-room, with the intent to eliminate the barriers between the inside and the outside: through this artifice, the internal area spreads into the surrounding area. The light captured through the frontal openings and the "cuts" present in the covering creates a relaxing environment. The finishing of the interiors “proceed” through the external ones: on the one hand, the floors are made of white and grey industrial concrete sanded by hand and finally waxed; on the other hand, the walls are made of mortar and white lime. The particular construction technique used to cover the building with steel plates has allowed to eliminate the usual constructive elements: channels, downspouts, window sills, trims, shutters... by conferring constructive simplicity and by safeguarding the formal elegance. Cooling and heating are guaranteed by underfloor radial panels which operate with the energy supplied by heat pumps. From a technological point of view, the house is fully automated thanks to a domotic system which allows to manage the house, even at a distance, in each of its function.
